Background

Durham County Council and our contractor, BAM Nuttall, are approaching completion of highway works to improve traffic flow and enhance capacity at the A19 / A182 junction, to facilitate commercial development at Jade business park and in the local area. The improvements will support the expansion of the business park, allowing for the creation of an additional commercial space and jobs. It follows the first phase of development at the site, which opened in 2020.

These works, as well as the recently completed traffic signal reconfiguration and additional eastbound carriageway lane at Dalton Park, will also improve the traffic flow and journey times of general traffic.

Improved pedestrian and cyclist connections are being implemented across the A19 which currently interrupts long and short distance cycle journeys along National Cycle Route 1.

Update

The new active travel bridge is now open to the public following completion of all subsequent works following the installation of the structure in 2024. The standalone structure provides a fully segregated pedestrian and cyclist route across the A19 whilst allowing the adjacent highway bridge to be widened from two carriageway lanes to four. Please be aware that on occasion, the bridge may have to close for short periods to facilitateovernight works required to complete the wider scheme.

The dumbbell roundabouts on each side of the A19 have been removed, with carriageway kerb lines and footways realigned to allow for additional carriageway lanes on approaches.

Resurfacing of the eastern side of the junction is planned on the nights of 22nd, 23rd and 24th April 2025 (8pm – 6am) with significant signed diversions routes planned. Following the resurfacing, in order to install the kerbed islands within the junction, various night time road closures are planned in May and June, primarily the A19 southbound exit and entry slip roads. Please visit www.durham.gov.uk/a19/a182 for further detail regarding the associated diversion routes to assist in planning journeys, road users are encouraged to allow for additional time.

Please be aware that it is currently planned to signalise the junction using temporary traffic signals w/c 28th April 2025, signage will be implemented on site to inform road users of the change.

Programme of Works
The scheme is programmed for completion Summer 2025.

The latest programme of works can be found at: http://www.durham.gov.uk/A19/A182

Diversions
Some vehicle diversions will be required to facilitate specific construction phases. When vehicle diversion information is available it will be detailed athttp://www.durham.gov.uk/A19/A182. On occasion, localised pedestrian and cyclist diversions will be in place and suitably signed throughout the various phases of work.

See One Network Link for details.

Although some disruption is inevitable, we are doing everything possible to minimise the impact to businesses and residents, with phased work and night time closures where possible. On occasions, the dates of road closures may change due to unforeseen circumstances with communication streams updated to inform affected stakeholders.
